In the primary analyses, hypertension prevalence was defined as a systolic blood pressure (BP) of 140 mm Hg or greater, a diastolic BP of 90 mm Hg or greater, or an individual taking an antihypertensive. Hypertension awareness and treatment were based on self-report. Hypertension control was defined as having a systolic and diastolic BP below the diagnostic threshold. All estimates were for non-pregnant US adults age 18 years or older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2018). Estimates were age-adjusted to the 2018 US census.
