Abstract

PIP: A case of recurrent intestinal ileus caused by condoms is discussed in which a water-filled condom was removed 5 times over a period of 9 years from the intestinal tract of the same male. The patient was a chronic alcoholic who, when in an intoxicated state during sex, presumably swallowed condoms which resulted ultimately in the need for 14 laparotomies, 3 enterotomies, the resectioning of an intestine, and, once, the gastroscopic removal of the condom. The last 2 laparotomies involved postoperative complications including adynamic ileus, wound infection, and development of fistulas. The patient was hospitalized for a total of 89 days. It is noted that while the literature cites many examples of peroral ingestion of condoms containing narcotics, primarily by drug smugglers, there is only 1 previous case in which a condom contained water. Despite the stressful operations and the support provided by outpatient alcoholic treatment centers, with administration of Antabus, the patient continued his unusual conduct. He now has a constantly elevated S-amylase, indicating that his pancreas is now affected.
