(A) Lempel-Ziv Complexity (LZc) presented for delirious and non-delirious trial participants, with LZc values from non-delirious participants subtracted from those with delirium in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). Complexity is increased within alpha (8–12 Hz) and high-alpha (10–14 Hz) bands and decreased in the theta (4–8 Hz) band during PACU delirium (see text for details). (B) LZc is presented for trial participants randomized to intravenous caffeine vs. dextrose 5% in water placebo. Alpha complexity was significantly reduced in participants randomized to caffeine. LOC = loss of consciousness; Maint = maintenance phase of anesthesia; Pre-oxyg = preoxygenation; PACU = postanesthesia care unit.
