Axial CT view of thyroid cartilage and vocal cords. A, Visualization of the vocal cords. B, Thyroid cartilage. CT imaging for planning of laryngoplasty. Our institution frequently utilizes CT imaging with IV contrast for surgical planning and identifying the distance between the vocal cords and thyroid cartilage. We usually utilize 2.5 mm cuts on the CT and specifically ask for the distance between the thyroid cartilage and the anterior insertion of the true vocal cords. We first identify the vocal cords in the transverse cuts (A) and then scroll up cut by cut to identify the distance between this point and the beginning of the thyroid cartilage (B).
