Excerpt

Healthcare settings at present are driven by quality initiatives aiming to improve services and patient care. Haematopoietic Stem Cells Transplantation (HSCT) is an evolving field influenced by advancement in technology and research, which is reflected in its complex modality and sophisticated procedures. Due to the necessary collaboration between several entities (donor registries, testing laboratories, collection facilities, manufacturing and storing facilities, clinical programs and logistic services) in performing HSCT, achieving high-quality services is considered a challenge. Therefore, transplantation professionals have been continuously developing and improving standards to help control this complexity and manage the inherent risks of this treatment. In this regard, HSCT was, and continues to be, a pioneer in the area of quality and standards.
