Lifestyle Modification for Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention
Excerpt
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) have a high prevalence worldwide. T2DM affects people of all ages, with an age-standardized prevalence of 6.1% and an estimated disease burden of approximately 529 million people affected in 2021, increasing to more than 10% with an estimated 1.31 billion worldwide affected by the year 2050. It has been estimated that the total global economic impact of T2DM was $1.3 trillion in 2015, with an estimated impact of $2.1 trillion by 2030.
Similarly, comorbid CVD affects 32.2% of all people with T2DM. CVD is responsible for 47.2% of deaths among people with diabetes as opposed to 20.1% of deaths among people without diabetes. Though there are several medications targeted for the management of T2DM and heart disease, once an individual has been diagnosed with these conditions, it is important to consider lifestyle modifications that can be used to prevent T2DM and heart disease.
