This is the first study to demonstrate that patients with SSc with early disease (<3 years from the time of diagnosis) exhibit differences in gut microbial composition compared with healthy age- and gender-matched controls. This study also found that patients with unique disease features of SSc, such as ILD, exhibited similar microbial composition profiles.

In the first study published on the gut microbiome in SSc, we demonstrated that patients with SSc had distinct differences in microbial composition compared with age- and gender-matched controls using colonic lavage specimens. This study also demonstrated that specific bacteria genera were associated with worsening GI symptoms in SSc.
