Figure 1
Histological microphotographs of our case of cotton fibers-induced periapical foreign body granuloma. (A, B, C and D) Low-, medium-, and high-power microphotographs exhibiting a piece of fibrous connective tissue with foci of hemorrhage and a severe infiltrate of lymphoplasma cells and a lot of multinucleated foreign body giant cells. (C and D) The high-power views showed some short or elongated and thin or thick fiber-like foreign body materials in the tissue sections. (E and F) Under the polarized light microscope and on the high-power view, many short or elongated, thin or thick, fiber-like birefringent foreign body materials were detected; some of them were discovered inside the cytoplasm of multinucleated foreign body giant cells and the others were found outside the multinucleated foreign body giant cells. (Hematoxylin and eosin stain; original magnification; A, 4 × ; B, 10 × ; C, D, E and F, 20 × ).
