Sexually transmitted infections (STI) in Germany are constantly rising. STI screening and testing decreased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic due to redistribution of public health resources. During the pandemic, there was a decline in the diagnosis of STIs. A minor aspect of this could be explained by reductions in the number of sexual contacts and therefore actual reduced infections, but the greater aspect seems to be due to underdiagnosis. A dramatic surge of infections is expected in the next few years. It is of utmost importance to resume STI screening for early detection and treatment and thereby lowering the transmission of STIs.

Die Anzahl von sexuell übertragbaren Infektionen (STI) in Deutschland nimmt stetig zu. Im Rahmen der COVID-19-Pandemie kam es durch Umverteilung von Ressourcen des Gesundheitswesens zu Einschränkungen von Screening- und Testangeboten. In den Jahren der Pandemie wurden weniger STI gemeldet. Ein Teil hiervon lässt sich durch Einschränkungen von Sexualkontakten erklären und damit tatsächlich verminderten Infektionen, der weitaus größere Teil wird jedoch auf Unterdiagnostik und eine erhöhte Dunkelziffer zurückgeführt. In den nächsten Jahren wird ein starker Anstieg von Infektionen vorausgesagt. Die Wiederaufnahme von niedrigschwelligen Screeningangeboten ist wichtig, um Infektionen frühzeitig feststellen und therapieren zu können und die Weitergabe so einzudämmen.
