A new approach to stroke management
Abstract
Stroke incidence has declined in recent decades, largely as a result of risk factor management rather than any stroke-specific therapy. Despite improved diagnostic techniques, aggressive management of transient ischemic attack and asymptomatic carotid disease has proved to be costly and of questionable benefit. The emphasis in the clinical approach to stroke should shift to acute intervention and "cerebral resuscitation."
