Insulin-independent glycemic control during lactation augments glucose uptake and utilization in mammary glands. Simultaneously, glucose uptake in insulin-responsive tissues such as the liver, adipose tissues, and skeletal muscle, that is, insulin-dependent glucose uptake and utilization, shows a reduction compared to the nonlactating state. ER stress and the UPR in mammary glands and adipose tissues during lactation may play a key role in coordination of the maternal metabolic remodeling. ER: endoplasmic reticulum; UPR: unfolded protein response.
