Pathogenesis of malakoplakia in the kidney. Malakoplakia may result from impaired killing and elimination of bacteria by the macrophage phagolysosome, resulting in the accumulation of enlarged macrophages (von Hansemann cells) with densely calcified cores composed of undigested bacteria and bacterial products (Michaelis-Gutmann bodies).
