Therapeutic implications. Emergence of in vitro microfluidic devices, reliable and suitable animal models, and cell atlas will contribute to identifying novel therapeutic targets to treat patients at risk of developing CTEPH (1) after acute PE, versus (2) inoperable patients, or (3) patients with residual or recurrent PH after PEA or BPA. BPA = balloon pulmonary angioplasty; CTEPH = chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension; PE = pulmonary embolism; PEA = pulmonary endarterectomy; PH = pulmonary hypertension.
