Graphic representation of two hypothetic metabolic states of PC within the BM, depending on niche composition. In this model, PC within their stromal cell niche (green mesenchymal stem cells) are low in cytoplasmic calcium (I, blue PC) in times of sufficient nutrient supply (purple hexagons), e.g. due to a dense vessel network (red branches) and only few other hematopoietic cells (grey), competing for nutrients. Calcium-low cells produce antibodies at high rates. Vice versa, in times of metabolic stress (II) through decreased nutrient supply due to hematopoietic nutrient sinks or vessel remodeling (5), antibody output is decreased.
