Decrease in serine level and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Insufficient insulin action causes a decrease in the serine level of serum and of several organs. A decrease in serine and an application of high‐fat diet promote the production of deoxydihydroceramide, which is a more toxic form of ceramide, from a reaction with serine palmitoyl transferase. These changes cause and develop diabetic peripheral neuropathy. A serine supplemented diet or myriocin, a serine palmitoyl transferase inhibitor, can improve peripheral neuropathy in diabetic mice.
