Innate-like T cells link microscopic intestinal inflammation to spondyloarthritis. A similar enrichment of IL-17-producing innate-like T cells (γδ T, MAIT, and iNKT cells) in the inflamed joints as well as intestines of SpA patients provides support for the existence of a “gut-synovial axis”, . It also suggests a potential pathogenic role of these cells. Intestinal microbiota and metabolites modulate the functions of innate-like T cells, and thus could be targeted in axSpA therapies.
