TCAs from the primary somatosensory (VP) and visual (dLGN) thalamus in Dlx5/6::cre; Ebf1fl/− (Ebf1cKO) mice are mistargeted on their way to cortical targets due to defects along their pathway in the subpallium. Mistargeting is detected at embryonic day 16.5 until the early postnatal period. Further, they have notable cell death in VP and dLGN, leading to size reduction. Miswiring is corrected in an early postnatal (P0 to P2) plasticity period, but due to the reduction in the size of the thalamic nuclei, the corresponding cortical areas (S1 and V1) are also reduced in size, while the posterolateral association cortex (PTLp) in between them expands. The sensitive period for this form of TCA plasticity is dependent on the time of birth and serotonin levels. (++) signs indicate areal expansion, and (−−) signs indicate areal reduction.
