Preclinical murine model of tobacco smoke and aspiration of oral taxa. Over a 12-week period, Sulaiman and colleagues exposed mice to tobacco smoke, aspiration of oral taxa (Streptococcus mitis, Veillonella parvula, and Prevotella melaninogenica), or the combination of tobacco smoke and aspirated oral taxa. Lung histology and immunologic responses were assessed, and the results are summarized above. Responses to tobacco smoke exposure (alone) and aspiration (alone) are illustrated in comparison with the authors’ phosphate-buffered saline negative control. Response to the combination of tobacco smoke exposure and aspiration is illustrated in comparison with aspiration alone. Illustration by Shane W. Hodgson.
