Gametologs encoded on the X and Y chromosomes, though highly homologous, may possess unique functional activities (axe vs. hammer). Due to their sequence similarities, typical protein-based assays are unable to distinguish between X and Y chromosome encoded proteins. The unequal gene copies of gametologs among different karyotypes including XX, XY, XO (Turner syndrome), mosaic loss of Chromosome Y (mLOY), and mosaic loss of Chromosome X (mLOX), XYY (Jacobs syndrome) and XXY (Klinefelter syndrome), may contribute to a variety of sexually dimorphic phenotypes or diseases, or conditions associated with sex chromosome mosaicism.
