A freestanding children’s hospital (FS-CH) is identified as an FS CH in the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database. A Non–FS-CH is a CH not identified as FS but had more than 1500 pediatric acute care discharges during the year. Non-CH is a hospital that had fewer than 1500 pediatric discharges during the year. Hospital classification was determined independently at each year examined.
