This conceptual illustration is meant to depict the challenge of balancing the competing risks of bleeding and thrombosis when making decisions about venous thromboembolism prophylaxis. These decisions are often guided by risk assessment models that may inconsistently categorize patient risk. Overprophylaxis of patients at low risk and underprophylaxis of patients at high risk is a continued clinical challenge.
