Senescence and stiffness are sufficient to induce expression of SOX9 in SMCs (1) which promotes the elevation of extracellular matrix-modifying proteins such as LH3 and proteins necessary for endosomal and extracellular vesicle (EVs) formation (2). In these cells LH3 is packaged into EVs and delivered to the extracellular space (3), where its collagen modification functions further promotes stiffness (4) which feeds forward promoting senescence in neighboring cells.
