Compartment-specific lingering of detectable replicative SARS-CoV-2 in the lungs of mechanically ventilated patients leads to adverse outcomes. Upregulation of GREM1, FGFBP-1, and SDC2 was found in positive individuals with coinfection of several opportunistic bacterial species. FGFBP-1 = fibroblast growth factor–binding protein 1; GREM1 = gremlin 1; SD2 = syndecan-binding protein 2.
