Pathogenesis of portal vein thrombosis. The portal vein wall develops intimal thickening in patients with cirrhosis, whereas no intima is present in a healthy portal vein wall. In patients with portal vein thrombosis, the intima thickening has progressed and may be accompanied by a fibrin-rich thrombus within the portal vein lumen.
