Example of a melanoma in situ: A) patient with a background of substantial sun damage had a mole with unusual features upon first presentation (black dots, asymmetry): The patient declined biopsy at the first appointment, so the dermatologist elected for surveillance. B) At a reassessment 12 months later, regression of pigment in the centre was noted: The macule was biopsied and the patient was later diagnosed with melanoma in situ.
