Biosocial determinants inform on enduring cancer disparities

David P Turner et al. Trends Cancer. 2024 Aug.

Abstract

Social, environmental, and biological risk factors influence exposures to newly termed 'biosocial determinants of health'. As molecular factors that lie at the intersection between lived experiences and individual biology, biosocial determinants may inform on the enduring complexity of cancer disparity across transdisciplinary studies.

Keywords: biosocial synergism; cancer disparities; glycation; inequity; social and biological determinants.

Key figure, Figure 1.
A) Biosocial determinants may report on the role of biosocial synergism in cancer disparities. As molecular entities that lie at the intersection between social and biological determinants of health, biosocial determinants may inform on biosocial synergism and its influence on tumor biology to enlighten on the complexities of cancer disparities. B) When social and biological determinants of health are compromised it can directly impact AGE homeostasis by perpetuating a vicious cycle of AGE formation, bioavailability, and pathogenicity. Complex relationships that exist between social and biological determinants of health may combine to increase both AGE bioavailability and exogenous exposure through their combined influence on non-enzymatic glycoxidation. This may lead to a perpetual cycle of metabolic and oxidative stress associated with increased tumor growth and progression (See text for details). Created with BioRender.com.
