A simplified schematic showing the role of NXF1-NXT1 in the transport of mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm (Left) and the effect of SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1 protein on mRNA export, translation, and stability (Right). Nsp1 binds the 40S ribosomal subunit at the mRNA entry channel via its helical C-terminal domain, which results in translation inhibition and subsequent mRNA degradation. The N-terminal domain of Nsp1 binds NXF1 to block nuclear export of mRNA.
