Figure 1.
Sex-based differences exist in the microbiome of IBS patients, and Prevotella is the main driver of those differences. The β diversity of the gut microbiome as depicted by principal coordinate analysis of (A) all participants, including healthy control participants and IBS patients; (B) healthy control participants only; and (C) IBS patients only. Analysis was adjusted for diet, age, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, and bowel subtype if applicable. The a diversity of the gut microbiome as depicted by the Shannon index (a measure of evenness) of (D) IBS patients as compared to control participants, (E) IBS patients across BH subtypes, and (F) IBS patients by IBS-SSS category. (G) Differential abundance testing of bacterial genera by sex adjusted for age, BMI, BH, race/ethnicity, diet, and multiple hypothesis testing. Those genera listed are those with a Q value of < 0.05. Box plots of Prevotella relative abundance in (H) male patients with IBS and (I) female patients with IBS categorized by IBS-SSS category. *P < .05. F, female; M, male; PC, principal component.
