Depiction of developmental stages and common imaging modalities. MRI provides structural, metabolic, and functional information across all ages at high spatial resolution, but has low temporal resolution, limited accessibility, and low portability. Ultrasound provides lower resolution structural and emerging functional information at high temporal resolution, mainly in fetuses and younger infants. fNIRS and EEG provide high temporal resolution, functional information in infant and toddlers with low spatial resolution. These modalities are portable, facilitating numerous experiments, include dyadic and naturalistic studies. MEG provides functional information at high spatial and temporal resolutions for all ages. Traditional MEG systems have limited accessibility and portability, but newer systems have reduced these limitations. Figure created by Drs.
