Schematic for an individualized approach to phosphate target. An individualized approach to phosphate target should factor in the burden of intervention required to achieve a stringent phosphate target, the patient's relative priorities regarding the desire to minimize cardiovascular risk and maximize quality of life, and other factors that may increase the risks of adverse effects from aggressive phosphate binder therapy and dietary restrictions, such as high risk for protein malnutrition and high existing pill burden.
