Indications of Amniocentesis and its Early and Late Complications
Abstract
Background: Currently, it is recommended to arrange screening for all women who are referred for prenatal care before the 20th week of gestation. Congenital and genetic diseases lead to disability and death in 3% of babies. Prenatal diagnosis is the only way to prevent the birth of babies with genetic disorders. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the indications of amniocentesis as well as its early and late complications.
Materials and methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 216 patients who were referred to the Perinatology Clinic of Sanandaj Besat Hospital in 2019-2020 and were candidates for amniocentesis. After collecting the data, analysis of data was done in SPSS software (version 21).
Results: In the investigation of complications caused by amniocentesis, spontaneous abortion occurred in five cases (2.31%), amniotic fluid leakage in nine cases (4.6%), spotting in seven cases (3.24%), chorioamnionitis in one case (0.46%), and premature birth in 35 cases (16.2%). In this study, there were no reports of skin and eye complications.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this research, the most common early and late complications were amniotic fluid leakage and childbirth before 37 weeks of gestation, respectively.
