Evolution-guided learning of codon usage. The mBART model, trained on evolutionarily related sequences, learns to predict codon sequence from an amino acid sequence (Upper). Once trained, the model enables organism-specific codon sequence prediction using two complementary tasks: (i) using the amino acid sequence alone (“masking”; Lower Left) or (ii) guided by the amino acid sequence and an accompanying nucleotide sequence of an ortholog (“mimicking”; Lower Right).
