During normal branching morphogenesis, acinar formation leads to mature alveoli with thin secondary septation, capillaries in close proximity to the alveolar epithelium (A). In cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), lungs exhibit alveolar reduction, septal and interstitial thickening, and remodeling of the pulmonary vessels (B). Treatment with vascular endothelial growth factor–conjugated ND-VEGF compliment TO in mouse and rabbit models of CDH, rescuing the lung phenotypes. The treated lungs consist of alveoli that appear nearly normal, with significantly reduced vascular remodeling (C).
