Figure 1
Dialysis epidemiology in Romania. (A) Graph shows the annual number of new patients starting hemodialysis and PD in Romania from 2010 to 2023, along with projections for 2024–2025. It highlights a stable trend for hemodialysis and a significant decline in PD use, projected to near 0 by 2025. (B) Graph illustrates the total number of prevalent hemodialysis and PD patients over the past decade (2014–2023) with estimates for 2024. It shows a gradual increase in hemodialysis patients (+1.6%) and a consistent decline in PD patients (−11%) over the period, reflecting the dominance of hemodialysis as the preferred dialysis modality. Survival analysis of 24,026 incident dialysis patients (2013–2022) in Romania, followed for at least 12 months until December 31, 2023, with 10,921 deaths recorded. (C) Overall survival curve shows a median survival of 5 years. Survival rates were 85% at 1 year, 50% at 5 years, and 25% at 10 years. (D) Survival by age groups demonstrates significantly better survival for younger patients (<55 years) compared with those aged 55–75 and older than 75 years (P < 0.001). (E) Survival based on primary kidney disease with glomerular and tubulo-interstitial nephropathies shows better outcomes compared with diabetic kidney disease and vascular nephropathies (P < 0.001). (F) Comparison of survival between hemodialysis and PD patients shows no significant difference (P = 0.9). HD, hemodialysis; HTA, arterial hypertension; NA, not assessed; PD, peritoneal dialysis.
