Preparation of partially O-methylated alditol acetate standards of allose, altrose, gulose and talose for GC-MS analysis of structures containing rare sugars
Abstract
Mixtures of partially O-methylated alditol acetate standards of allose, altrose, gulose and talose were synthesised. Methyl glycosides of each sugar were prepared and partially methylated using the NaOH/DMSO methylation procedure, adding 0.75 hydroxyl group equivalents of CH3I. Following conversion to partially methylated alditol acetates, via successive hydrolysis, reduction, and acetylation, the derivatives were separated by gas chromatography on low and high polarity columns and analysed by electron impact mass spectrometry. Detailed data on retention times relative to myo-inositol hexaacetate on the two columns are provided.
