Influences contextuelles du maintien de l’allaitement après la reprise du travail en France
Abstract
Introduction: Breastfeeding durations in France are among the lowest in Europe. Work is the primary reason for weaning once breastfeeding is in place. The dose-dependent benefits of breastfeeding make it necessary to support mothers who wish to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.
Purpose of the research: A narrative synthesis of French and Western scientific studies on the contextual influences of continued breastfeeding at work in order to better understand the French situation.
Results: Publications on continued breastfeeding in France or at work were rare. Returning to work before 16 weeks was a stable weaning factor. Few studies have looked at co-parents when breastfeeding mothers return to work. The normative breastfeeding duration seemed to be that of post-natal leave. Reconciling breastfeeding and work was difficult. The workplace was an influential social environment conducive to effective accommodations. Consultation with a trained professional to anticipate breastfeeding at work seemed relevant. Support for breastfeeding in childcare seemed insufficient.
Conclusions: This assessment of barriers to breastfeeding at work in France is a first step in encouraging the development of inclusive policies. Breastfeeding requires active participation from society..
