Abstract

Introduction: Evidence-informed decision-making is an effective strategy to address the health needs of populations. However, in Burkina Faso, the concept of using evidence to inform decision-making faces challenges. The objective of this study was to identify barriers to the use of evidence-informed decision-making in the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene of Burkina Faso.

Methods: This was a qualitative study involving individual semi-structured interviews with key informants. A thematic analysis was carried out using the qualitative data processing software NVivo 12.

Results: The main barriers to the use of evidence-informed decision-making were: insufficient funding for the production and exploitation of research results, insufficient quality of data, difficulties in accessing results, insufficient interaction between stakeholders, mismatch between the needs of the ministry and the research conducted, conflicts of interest, influence of partners, and inadequate format for the presentation of search results.

Conclusion: This study has highlighted the challenges associated with using evidence for public health decision-making within the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene of Burkina Faso. Addressing these barriers could help to improve evidence-informed decision-making and hence public health interventions that promote population health.
