Développer la pratique d’activités physiques et sportives d’enfants de milieux défavorisés : configurations et perspectives d’une approche ascendante faite d’interventions en contexte scolaire
Abstract
Objective: Children from disadvantaged backgrounds, faced with unfavorable family and residential contexts, participate less in physical activities (PA). This limits the development of their motor skills and physical fitness, which are essential for an active lifestyle and confidence in their abilities. We therefore launched a program targeting children aged 7 to 11 in priority neighborhoods and in REP+ schools. We adopted a ground-level approach to respond directly to the needs of disadvantaged communities. Our objective was to compare two targeted and adapted strategies aimed at encouraging sustainable involvement in PA. We measured their impact on children's physical and psychological dimensions after the first 12 weeks of a 24-week intervention.
Methods: Two protocols were tested in two schools. The first focused on physical education (PE) classes to develop physical and psychological skills. The second added practice opportunities outside PE classes. We used an embedded design with mixed methods to assess physical fitness, motor skills, motivation, commitment, and attitudes, compared with a control group following standard programs.
Results: Only slight improvements in the psychological correlates of PA were observed, with limited progress after 12 weeks. This interim assessment shows that full effects require more time. We hope to see more visible results between T0 and T2. The next cycle, with extracurricular activities and greater family involvement, should generate significant advances.
