Abstract

Introduction: The aging of the French population represents a major public health challenge, with chronic diseases constituting the main cause of disability among older adults. Physical activity plays an essential role in healthy aging, by preventing these illnesses and improving well-being. However, the practice of physical activity declines with age, particularly among people living in precarious conditions.

Aim of the study: Against this backdrop, the Mutualité Française Nouvelle-Aquitaine's "Pas d'âge pour bouger" project, of which we provide an experience report here, aims to promote physical activity among over-60s, while combating social inequalities in health. Deployed in the Peyrouat district of Mont-de-Marsan, a priority urban district, the project includes adapted physical activity workshops and health awareness sessions.

Results: An improvement in participants' physical fitness was observed, although program attendance declined over time. Motivational interviews revealed obstacles such as physical limitations and fear of others. On the other hand, the desire to take care of oneself or break out of isolation was revealed. The community approach and social ties are thus identified as levers to encourage participation Conclusions: This project highlights the levers and obstacles to reducing inequalities in participation and access to physical activity among older adults. It also suggests avenues of reflection for more relevant and inclusive public policies.
