Summary of the best evidence for perioperative enteral nutrition management in patients with laryngeal cancer
Abstract
Background: Postoperative malnutrition is very common in laryngeal cancer patients, which will lead to slower healing, lower quality of life, and increase patients' pain and medical cost. Enteral nutrition can better improve malnutrition in laryngeal cancer patients. The aim of this study was to provide an evidence-based basis for perioperative clinical practice in laryngeal cancer patients by systematically searching for interventions for perioperative enteral nutrition management.
Methods: According to the '6S' evidence resource model, evidence retrieval is searched from the top-down and collected relevant guidelines, clinical decision, system evaluation, and expert consensus. The retrieval time limit was from the database establishment to 1 April 2024. Two reviewers independently screened and evaluated the literature, and then extracted and summarised the evidence according to the JBI grading of evidence and recommendation system.
Results: A total of 19 papers were ultimately included, including two clinical decisions, nine guidelines, one systematic evaluation, and seven expert consensus papers. By summarising and integrating the evidence, the final evidence was summarised in seven areas: nutritional risk screening and assessment, multidisciplinary team, preoperative nutritional support, postural management, postoperative nutritional support, discharge and follow-up, and health education, resulting in 29 best evidence.
Conclusions: This study summarises the best evidence on perioperative enteral nutrition for patients with laryngeal cancer in seven areas, and develops a programme of perioperative enteral nutrition interventions and practices for clinical staff or family caregivers to target patients with laryngeal cancer, and to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients with laryngeal cancer.
