[Tularaemia]
Abstract
Tularaemia is a rare, zoonotic, vector-borne bacterial infection caused by Francisella tularensis, a Gram-negative coccobacillus. Rodents serve as hosts and reservoirs. A significant rise in incidence has been noticed, yet public awareness remains low, as argued in this review. Tick-borne infection is the most common route of transmission in Denmark and usually presents with a necrotic wound and regional adenopathy. Infections can be prolonged and severe. Tularaemia is often mistaken for other infections due to its multifaceted clinical manifestations. Appropriate therapy is ciprofloxacin, alternatively doxycycline.
