Enterovirus Meningitis
Abstract
Enterovirus meningitis is a leading cause of viral meningitis worldwide, predominantly affecting children and immunocompromised individuals. Enteroviruses, transmitted via fecal-oral and respiratory routes, cause seasonal outbreaks, straining healthcare systems. While typically self-limiting, severe cases can lead to encephalitis and neurological complications. Diagnosis relies on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to distinguish it from bacterial meningitis. With no specific antiviral treatment available, supportive care remains essential, emphasizing the need for improved surveillance, prevention strategies, and vaccine development.
