DNA banking: Saving your genetic legacy for the future

Abstract

DNA banking is a clinical resource available to preserve an individual's information for genetic testing. DNA can be isolated from blood or tissue samples, then preserved and stored (banked) in a laboratory setting for future genetic testing. Nurse practitioners may include the option of DNA banking in discussions surrounding health care planning, end of life care, or when death is sudden and unexplained.
