Transfer of beta-lactamase genes of Neisseria gonorrhoeae by conjugation
Abstract
Recent isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae have been shown to be resistant to penicillin because they produce beta-lactamase. In this study, conjugal transfer of the beta-lactamase gene to a recipient N. gonorrhoeae strain occurred in one of the two strains studied but not in the other. The transconjugant could also conjugally transfer the beta-lactamase gene to an Escherichia coli strain.
