Functional Esophageal Disorders in Children
Abstract
Functional esophageal disorders (FEDs) involve esophageal symptoms not explained by mechanical obstructions, major esophageal motor disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or mucosal inflammation. Symptoms can include dysphagia, heartburn, chest pain, and/or globus sensation. FEDs are categorized as pain-predominant or dysphagia-predominant disorders. The pain-predominant diagnoses are non-erosive reflux disease, reflux hypersensitivity, and functional heartburn.
