A virtual-based educational intervention for nurses about trauma patients triage: A mixed-method study protocol

Abstract

Background: The lack of professional knowledge and clinical skills of nurses about triage has been a serious issue for health care managers. Therefore, considering the importance of applying learner-based methods and using virtual learning, the present study will be conducted with the aim of designing a web-based educational intervention for nurses about the triage of trauma patients.

Materials and methods: This mixed-method study (qualitative-quantitative) will be conducted in four phases: literature review, qualitative research, program design and validation, and quantitative evaluation. In the first phase, a comprehensive literature review will be conducted to extract educational methods used in Iran and other countries. The second phase involves conventional content analysis based on semi-structured interviews with nurses and emergency medicine specialists to identify educational needs in triage. Participants will be selected through purposive sampling. In the third phase, a web-based educational program will be designed using the findings from the first two phases. The program will then be validated through the classic Delphi method (RAND approach). In the final phase, the educational program will be implemented in an experimental study involving control and intervention groups, and the effectiveness of the intervention will be evaluated.

Conclusion: The development of web-based training programs that consider learners' needs can significantly enhance the effectiveness and implementation of educational initiatives. Furthermore, integrating educational technology --such as designing an experimental platform tailored to the social and cultural context of Iran --can improve triage-related training for nurses beyond their formal academic education.
