Musculoskeletal Ultrasound as a Diagnostic Tool for Sports-Related Hip Injuries

Zayd Chishti et al. Cureus. .

Abstract

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) is a valuable tool for assessing hip pain due to its wide availability, lack of radiation exposure, and cost-effectiveness. In evaluating sports injuries, dynamic US examination provides substantial benefits in diagnostic clarity and precision. The high prevalence of hip and pelvis injuries among athletes, coupled with the structural complexity and deep position of the hip joint, makes US a practical skill and an indispensable tool in the diagnosis of hip-related injuries. This paper aims to review the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the hip joint and surrounding structures, outline proper scanning techniques, and delineate common intra-articular and extra-articular pathologies associated with sports participation.

Keywords: diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound; dynamic ultrasound; hip injuries; hip pain in athletes; hip pathology; hip ultrasound; musculoskeletal ultrasound; point-of-care ultrasound (pocus); sports ultrasound; sports-related hip injuries.
