The alveolar microenvironment in SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia is characterised by diffuse alveolar damage, viral infection of alveolar epithelial cells and macrophages, a myelo-lymphocytic immune infiltrate, and deposition of collagen VI with pro-C6 detectable in the serum. PDL1: programmed death-ligand 1; IDO1: indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1.
