Getting nervous: the origins and evolution of NAP8
Abstract
NAP8, the 8th National Audit Project to be undertaken by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, is due to launch in early 2026, focusing on major complications of regional anaesthesia (both central and peripheral blocks) and other perioperative peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries not caused by direct surgical injury. UK national audit projects examine rare complications of anaesthesia. We outline why these topics need to be examined, how this will be done, potential challenges of the project, and how such challenges will be mitigated.
Keywords: epidural anaesthesia; nerve block; peripheral nerve injury; spinal anaesthesia; spinal cord injury.
