Creating an Inclusive Gender-Affirming Surgical Environment
Abstract
Gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is a unique subspecialty as patients are heavily minoritized and stigmatized, meaning special attention must be taken throughout the perioperative process. Using both literature and personal experience as community members and plastics surgeons offering GAS, we offer practical considerations for the creation of trauma-informed, comprehensive, and affirming surgical environments. This includes the creation of affirming environments, social supports, and trauma-informed interactions that see GAS patients as experts in their experiences. Outside the care environment, we offer recommendations for ways to improve access to care, connect with community, and advocate for TGD individuals broadly.
